What 45 Years in Retail Floristry Taught Me

Forty-five years seems like a long time in any career, but when you love what you do and you're passionate, it seems to go by in the blink of an eye and a few band-aids. What I realize is that so much has changed over those years and I find myself with what’s known as the curse of knowledge, which is assuming that others have the same background knowledge as I do to understand what I’m talking about. Of course I should know better when I’m talking with an aspiring entrepreneur half my age!

There is so much I’ve learned over the years in the floral industry, but two recurring themes are always at the forefront of my mind:

1. There’s always more to learn.
2. Share your knowledge - it's a gift.

That’s why creating The Real Life Retail Florist online floristry & business course was important to me. I wanted to create an education system that truly breaks down the barrier of the curse of knowledge, shares years of experience and expertise, packed with tools for success, and worth the money. My goal for this course is for the aspiring business owner to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to move forward and take their vision from dream to reality.

Here is the short list of what I’ve learned:

• Listen to others, you don’t know it all.

• Continue to learn, grow, and give back to your industry and community.

• Ego can kill your career.

• Surround yourself with positive people who care.

• Flowers bring the world joy and happiness; be sure to enjoy them yourself.

• Owning your own floral business is the hardest job you’ll ever love.

The beautiful thing about this list is that it challenges and celebrates you at the same time. 

I knew I couldn’t create this alone, so I surrounded myself with positive, creative and successful women whom I consider experts in the floral industry. Abby Chick, Ellie LaFever, and Lori Wilson brought their individual and collaborative efforts to make this happen. Together we literally thought of EVERYTHING!
